What an amazing story Mark and Judith!
When my husband and I got our first dog, Jack, a black lab/pit X from Heaven Can Wait Rescue, we wanted a healthy, happy dog. Through some research and talking with fellow dog owners, we decided that we would be feeding a RAW diet. We started feeding our dog a chicken and veg diet, from a company that we will not name. We thought we were doing the right thing and we seemingly had what we wanted, a happy, healthy dog. Jack was a little on the chunky side, but we attested that to not enough exercise and too much food. He had pretty rotten breath though, but most dogs we knew also did. A year later, we adopted our second dog, Ani, a white staffie bull terrier from Pitbulls for Life. We started her on the same diet that Jack was on. The results were definitely NOT the same (other than the breath!). Ani's belly was bright red and she constantly was at her paws. We were at a loss with her, not knowing what to do. We didn't even think that her RAW diet was doing this to her. After about 6 months, Ani began developing fatty lumps on her legs. We had one removed on her lower back leg, but another one was developing on her back knee, this one would require a more intense surgery, having to completely put her under to remove the lump. Ani was also on the hefty side, but I deemed it to be for the same reasons Jack was a chunk. I believed needed to walk more and feed less.
After bringing her to see you two about a year ago, you both noticed what I did not. That is why Mark and Judith are amazing to go to when you have diet questions, not necessarily a vet. The chicken that we were feeding our dogs was too high in fat. We changed our dog's food to a leaner meat. Within days we saw a change. Ani's belly was pink again and she was not at her feet at all. Both Jack and Ani began losing excess weight and seemed to have more energy. Within a month, the fatty cyst on Ani's back leg disappeared. We cannot be certain that it was attributed to the food, but I believe it absolutely was.
We currently have two healthy and happy dogs, who love to eat the variety of meat we give them. They have bright, shiny coats, non-offensive breath and energy to spare!
Thank you Mark, Judith and Unleashed for helping us achieve our nutritional goals. You have a solid knowledge base regarding food and are ready and able to answer any food related questions brought forth. We know that when there are issues with our dogs, we can talk to the staff at Unleashed and decide where to go from there, whether it is a food/supplement issue or something that needs to be looked into by a vet. Thank you once again for opening our eyes to healthy food for our dogs, but also for ourselves. We are aware of what ALL of are family members are putting into their bodies!
